Environmentally friendly pupils from the school shot to the top of the award stakes by securing their first coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag award. The school have even been green in securing a recycled flagpole, which has been erected and donated by local builders, Westerman Homes.

The pupils have been working hard to transform their school’s daily routine into one that benefits the environment and saves the school money.

Simple changes, like ensuring all unnecessary lights are switched off and that paper, cans and other materials are recycled have already cut bills as well as making Parklands Infant & Nursery School one of the most sustainable schools in the country.

Managed in England by Keep Britain Tidy, Eco-Schools asks children to set up a committee involving pupils, staff, parents and governors.  They then set to work on a school audit that highlights areas of the school that could be made more environmentally friendly.

Head teacher, Mrs Judith Meller said, “Obtaining the Green Flag award is something that the whole school and its surrounding community can be proud of. Each pupil will be able to take away some degree of satisfaction in the knowledge that their actions have significantly altered their local environment. It has been a fantastic initiative for all involved, however it is by no means over, as the greater challenge is to maintain what we have achieved so far and look towards ways of improving even further.”

The benefits of working towards an award such as the Green Flag extend beyond the improvement of the environmental quality of the school. The programme gives the pupils a sense of responsibility and pride in what they have achieved. With this comes the hope that the pupils will continue this behaviour in the wider community.

Raising the flag at Parklands School

To help with the physical side of setting up their garden, putting up fencing, building raised beds

and digging the ground residents and staff from the Canaan Trust, the local Homeless Charity, has adopted Stanton Vale School as one of its Community Projects. Nikki says, ‘Our residents may be homeless but they are delighted to play a positive part in helping the children at Stanton Vale with their various gardening projects’.

Westerman Builders, recognising that the ground within the school garden is very heavy and clay based, kindly offered to provide some quality top soil to ensure that the children’s efforts in planting and nurturing their garden have the best possible chance of thriving.

Jonathan Gray, Stanton Vale Teacher leading the Garden Project, says, ‘It is wonderful for our children to be able to create and tend their own garden. Having the joy of seeing plants grow and thrive brings them a wonderful sense of achievement. Stanton Vale is delighted to have the assistance of the Canaan Trust to help make it happen for the children and receiving top soil from Westerman’s will ensure the efforts have the best chance of success.’
