Before he went, it was his idea to hold a rugby match to raise money for the charity, which supports members of the armed forces who have been wounded in service. He skippered a Help for Heroes team comprising players from various regiments, including 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment, The Royal Logistics Corps and ex servicemen. Some of the players, including two Fijians, had just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. They took on a team from Kim’s Long Eaton club in the match at West Park, with the Army running out 29-24 winners. Kim said “The day just couldn’t have gone better. It started off as an idea just for a pre-season warm-up with a few friends and then it just snowballed.

We had Domino Pizzas there, the Army recruitment van and a bouncy castle. There was a lot of support and a great atmosphere.” The clubs strong links to the Army were clear throughout the day, with the British Army recruitment stall and music from the Long Eaton Militaries Band. Des Chapman, the clubs president, is himself and Army Major. He said “We have always had connection with the Chetywind Barracks, Chilwell and the Engineers in particular. Past and Present I’d say around 25 members have been in the Army”.

Already £2,000 has been raised with more coming in from sponsors, including Westerman Homes.
